It’s Easter! The weather has been getting warmer. I see birds gathering materials for their nests, a hawk seems to have a completed one at the top of a tall sycamore tree here in our neighborhood. I enjoy hearing the pair of hawks call out during the day when they are fending off the crows. For some reason hearing their call gives me strength to carry on with my day, to keep at it even when it feels like I am being attacked by my own metaphorical crows.
WRITING PROGRESS
March had a lot of progress. I have been working out a lot of the “big ideas” in my book. I think that a larger picture is starting to emerge, a more holistic and interconnected concept. I am beginning to get the sense that I am creating a work of art, a cohesive piece of something that is meaningful and born from experiences I have gone through. That feeling excites me but that isn’t to say that it’s been smooth sailing, there are certainly challenges. At the moment it’s a lot of toggling between the details and the big picture.
Even though there are moments of self doubt and uncertainty, I know that no matter what I am here to get this done. I am committed to this novel and will see it through because I know inside me that I need it.
I wish I could speed up the process but I am learning to be patient.
INSPIRATION + LEARNING RESOURCES
Since my last post there are a couple of new things that have been helping me along my journey in creative writing:
- The Anatomy of Story by John Truby
- Judy Blume: Teaches Writing MasterClass
•The Anatomy of Story – John Truby•
This book has been great! John Truby is very comprehensive in breaking down essentials in creative writing and providing great examples from multiple stories/movies to show the points he is making. I am very happy to have come across this book and am sure it will be a great reference book for many years to come.
•Judy Blume: Teaches Writing MasterClass•
Judy Blume’s MasterClass was lots of fun. Her videos are very warm and encouraging. Judy empowers writers of all kinds to indulge their imagination and free themselves to write whatever comes from within.
In very exciting and related news Judy Blume’s book Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret. is being turned into a movie! It will be in theaters April 28, 2023, you can see a trailer on YouTube here.

CURRENTLY READING
The Lonely Hearts Book Club by Lucy Gilmore
Published March 28th, 2023.
I picked this book up because I was immediately drawn in by the premise of a meek librarian building a friendship with a grouchy old man. I have gotten through a couple of chapters and have really enjoyed the story so far. I look forward to the rest of the book and feel that it will be very heartwarming and sweet. I can’t wait to dig in some more.
FINISHED READING
Ok and to wrap it all up, a couple of books I finished are A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling.
A House with Good Bones is probably the first horror book I read on my own, mainly because well…I am a scary cat. I think this was a good one to start with because overall it was an enjoyable read without overly heavy horror elements. I would definitely consider this more of a gothic novel along the lines of Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which I read sometime last year. In fact now that I think about it they have similar botanical elements too, which is something I really liked about this book.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was a lot of fun. I enjoyed spending time in this world and ended up indulging even more by getting a couple of fun things for myself like cute Funko Pops and a few other things. The idea is to work my way through the series as the year goes on. I can’t wait!
And with that I’ll call it a day! Until next time 🙂
